The Individual Water Supply program encompasses all properties in Dorchester County that rely on individual wells rather than public supply to provide potable water supplies.  The program also includes agricultural wells, ground water heat pumps, irrigation wells, etc.  Both new well applications and replacement well applications must be submitted to this department prior to the construction of a well.  Well drillers who are licensed to drill wells in the State of Maryland submit applications for review and approval by this office.  Homeowners must submit a sanitary construction permit application in addition to the Well Driller’s application. The permit applications are reviewed and well site inspections are conducted to ensure proper well placement.  Well construction inspections are conducted by an environmental sanitarian to determine whether proper drilling practices are used.

After an individual well is completed and chlorinated by your well driller please allow the water to run off by outside hose for 3 to 5 days.  When chlorine is no longer evident by smell please contact Kimberly Keene at 410-901-8152 to arrange a date on which your water will be sampled.  Water samples are collected and submitted to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene laboratories to determine potability of the new water supply where appropriate.

Any information requests regarding the status of a well on a property must be made by completing and submitting a Property Status Request Form.
